Act It Out — free charades game for TV

Two teams, one actor at a time. The clue shows up only on the actor’s phone — everyone else, including their own team, has to guess from the acting alone before the timer runs out.

Combines classic charades with the private phone clue of Heads Up!, while the TV manages teams, turns, scoring, and the countdown.

Ideal player count

6–20 players split evenly across two teams keeps the rotation moving; 4 players (2 per team) is the minimum.

Session length

15–25 minutes for a default 3-round game; configurable shorter or longer.

Phone experience

When it’s your turn to act, your phone — and only your phone — shows the secret clue, a GOT IT / SKIP button pair, and a running clock. Everyone else’s phone just shows who’s acting and the live score; the clue never appears anywhere else.

TV / shared-screen experience

The shared screen shows the acting team, the timer, the turn score, and the streak — never the clue itself. In the last 10 seconds of every turn, Bash Time kicks in and every clue is worth double.

Scoring

A normal clue is worth 1 point, a hard clue is worth 2, and during the last 10 seconds of a turn (Bash Time) every clue is worth a flat 2 regardless of difficulty. Each actor gets 3 skips per turn. Highest team score after every round wins; a tie goes to sudden death.

How Act It Out works

Teams take turns sending one actor up. That actor’s phone privately shows a clue; they act it out with no talking or spelling while their team shouts guesses. A correct guess deals the next clue immediately, and the actor can skip up to three clues a turn if the room is stuck.

In the final 10 seconds of every turn, Bash Time hits and every clue — easy or hard — is worth a flat 2 points, so a stalled turn can still finish strong.

Why it works as a party game

Because the clue only ever exists on one phone, there’s no way to accidentally see it early — the platform’s private per-player channel makes sure of that, so the game stays fair even with the TV in full view of both teams.

Short, high-energy turns and a persistent per-team rotation mean everyone acts before anyone repeats, and a tied game goes to a fast sudden-death round instead of ending flat.

Frequently asked questions

Can other players see the clue on the TV?
No — the clue is delivered only to the acting player’s own phone over a private channel; the shared screen never shows clue text.
How many players can play Act It Out?
From 4 up to 20, split evenly across two teams — 2 players per team is the minimum for a playable game.
What happens if a turn ties the game?
A tie after the final round goes to sudden death: each team gets one clue and 20 seconds, no skips, to decide the winner.
Can I change the round count or turn length?
Yes — the game creator can pick 2, 3, or 4 rounds and a 30, 45, or 60 second turn length before starting.
Is Act It Out like Heads Up!?
Both give one player a private clue while others guess. Act It Out uses two teams, puts timing and scores on a shared TV, rotates actors automatically, and asks the actor to perform without speaking.
Is Act It Out like Taboo?
Both are clue-guessing games, but Act It Out is charades: the actor communicates through movement and cannot talk. It does not show a forbidden-word list or use a referee buzzer.
